OMEGA and the America’s Cup: past and present

Rich with history, innovation and prestige, the America’s Cup is one of the world’s oldest and most dramatic sporting events. Although fiercely contested since 1851, the “Auld Mug” has only ever been won by teams from four different countries.

Adding its own precision and excellence, OMEGA’s association extends back to 1995, when the brand supported Team New Zealand, led by the legendary sailor Sir Peter Blake. The kiwi’s victory that year paved the way for OMEGA to take the coveted role of Official Timekeeper in 2000 and again in 2003.

Now, history is set to repeat. OMEGA is returning to the role in 2021, measuring every moment of the final 13-race match at the 36th edition of the great event.

Here’s how the Match Racing drama will unfold in 2021. The Race Course on Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour is around 1.7 nautical miles long (roughly 3km). It’s also between 0.5nm and 0.8nm wide (0.9km to 1.5km), and boats must remain precisely within the set boundaries throughout the race.

On March 6th, the Defender Emirates Team New Zealand will face Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, the winner of the PRADA Cup, in a 13-race Match. The first team to score seven points will lift the “Auld Mug”, and also become the Defender of the 37th America’s Cup. An event in which there is no second place deserves a commemorative timepiece with leading technology.
